Lubricants Explained

Lubricants (lubes)

Why use lube?

Lube has two uses during sex:

  •    It makes all kinds of insertive sex more pleasant and comfortable for everyone, and
  •    It reduces friction and helps prevent condom breakage.

The vagina makes its own lube, it’s true, but that can sometimes dry out during sex, and leave you rubbing along, sometimes painfully. The small amount of moisture usually found around the anus is not enough to make anal penetration comfortable for both partners, either. And the thin film of lubrication that makers put on condoms isn’t enough to ensure pleasurable smoothness throughout sex.

Personal lubricants have been developed to stay wet longer, enhancing the sensations felt during sex for both partners. Lube is increasingly widely seen as a vital ingredient in sexual pleasure.

Freedoms Shop sells two types of lube: water-based and silicon-based. You can safely use any of them with any type of condom.

NB Do not use any type of oil-based lube with latex condoms. Sun creams, butter, lard, vegetable oil, massage oil — any of these will cause latex condoms to weaken and break very quickly.

Water-based lubes

These are good for your skin and wash off easily. If you want a clear lube, considerID Glide. For a more opaque look, try Liquid Silk.

Some water-based lubes are designed to enhance pleasure — for instance, ID Pleasureuses herbal extracts to increase blood flow to the areas where it is applied.

Silicon-based

Silicon-based lubes are designed to last longer without drying. They are generally a little more expensive than water-based lubes. They can also be used as a condom-friendly massage lotion. Try ID Millennium.
